Puerto del Rosario at a glance

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura and the seat of several important island institutions. Its old name was Puerto de Cabras. The municipality covers 289.95 km² and a lot of countryside, so the built-up town is only a part of it. The airport lies at El Matorral, 5 km from the town according to Aena. The port handles ferries and cruise ships.

Most visitors pass through for a flight, a ship or a ferry, and the town rewards a few hours rather than a week. It has a free open-air sculpture walk, a small house museum, city beaches and a harbour front. The classic resort areas, Corralejo and Caleta de Fuste, are separate places. This guide covers the capital and the trips you can make from it: the dunes, Isla de Lobos, Betancuria, El Cotillo and the ferry to Lanzarote. It is an independent site, not run by the council, the island government or a tour company. Prices are in euros as listed in 2026, and they change.

Good to know before you go

Where older guides and listings are out of date.

Morro Velosa is a building site

The viewpoint above Betancuria should not be planned as a museum with a café. Building work began after an announcement of 25 September 2025, and the tender for the fittings of the future centre was dated 14 August 2026. A reopening date is not confirmed.

Isla de Lobos needs a permit

The ferry fare, the permit and the optional handling fee are three different things. One operator lists €17 for an adult return, free permits if you apply yourself and an optional €2 for it to do so. A public consultation on a future entry price began on 15 July 2026, but no fee has been confirmed.

The €5.12 Lanzarote fare is for residents

The cheapest advertised fare on the fast ferry is a fare for Canary Islands residents. Visitors should expect to pay more and check the price for their date.

Longer lifeguard cover in 2026

A new lifeguard contract started on 16 April 2026. Playa Blanca has a longer supervised period, and Los Molinos has 8 months instead of 4. A Blue Flag still does not replace the flag on the day.

Winter hours of the museums differ

The salt and cheese museums list 09:30–17:30 from November to April on their own sites. The central museum listing says 10:00–18:00 all year. Plan for the earlier closing time.

Caleta de Fuste →

The municipal market is not a finished hall

On 28 September 2026 the council approved new market rules as a step towards tendering the stalls. Do not plan a visit around a market hall that is already running.

Puerto del Rosario: frequently asked questions

Is Puerto del Rosario worth a visit?

Yes, for a few hours or a day, if you take it for what it is: a working island capital. There are sculptures in the streets, the Unamuno house museum, city beaches and a harbour front. For a beach holiday, most visitors base themselves in Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste or El Cotillo instead. See things to do in town.

How far is the airport from Puerto del Rosario?

Aena gives 5 km. Bus lines 3, 10 and 16 link the town with the airport, and a taxi rank stands outside the terminal. The airport page has the details.

Do I need a permit for Isla de Lobos?

Yes. Visits to the islet need a permit that you request online in advance. One ferry operator states that applying yourself costs nothing and that it handles the request for €2 if you prefer. See the Isla de Lobos guide.

How do I get from Puerto del Rosario to Corralejo?

Bus line 6 connects the two, with a published fare of €3.40 per direction. Check the current timetable for the return trip. A rental car is the other option. See Corralejo.

Can cruise passengers walk into town?

The port operator gives 500 m from the cruise berth to the town centre and lists no shuttle. Treat the figure as a rough distance, not as a guaranteed walking time. See the cruise port page.

Is visitpuertodelrosario.com an official website?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the town council, the island government, Aena, a ferry line or any tour company.
